Untitled

supplejack/kareao watercolour on paper, 500x650mm

Untitled was the first in a series of works exploring kareao/supplejack both conceptually and materially. The watercolour used in this piece was made in collaboration with the vine itself: old kareao collected during bush walks was turned into charcoal, then ground into pigment and mixed into paint. This work is experimental, drawing from the tangled, looping forms of kareao. The softness of the handmade watercolour lends a fluidity to the lines brushed across the paper, evoking the movement of water — or of tuna/eels, which kareao is said to descend from in some pūrākau/narratives6. In this way, the work reflects on entanglement and material relationships with the more-than-human world.
